February 1st, 2019, Charlottetown – P.E.I. short track speed skaters Jenna Larter and Peter McQuaid are competing at the Canadian Open National Qualifier short track speed skating competition in Montreal, Que, starting today.

It will be the second national level event this season for the pair, who both took part in the Short Track Canada Cup in Laval in November. It will also be McQuaid’s second appearance at the National Qualifier event, after competing in the same event in 2016.

The P.E.I. skaters will be among a field of sixty male and sixty female athletes competing for berths in the Canadian Selections and Canadian Junior Selections meets to be held in March. The Selections events will determine national senior and junior rankings.

Larter, of Brookfield and McQuaid, of Charlottetown, will both be wearing P.E.I. colours at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta. later this month.

Racing at the National Qualifier, taking place at the Maurice Richard Arena, gets underway with the 1500 metre event on Friday, followed by 500 metre races on Saturday and concluding on Sunday with the 1000 metre distance.
