March 9th, 2023, Charlottetown – Island speed skaters Jenna Larter and Andrew Binns will be flying the P.E.I. flag at the Long Track Canada Cup 4 speed skating competition in Calgary this weekend.

The Speed Skating PEI members will be making their respective Canada Cup debuts in long track after taking up the discipline earlier this season.

Larter, who trains at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, has been mixing short track and long track competitions this season, with several major competitions under her belt in each. She set three new P.E.I. records for senior women in February, including in the 500- and 777-metre distances in short track and in the 500-metre distance in long track.

Binns, from Stratford, represented P.E.I. at the recent Canada Winter Games long track competition held on the Halifax Oval. The Islander grabbed 11th place in the 500-metre competition, within the field of 34 male skaters. Binns also lowered his own provincial record time for the 500-metre distance on the outdoor oval in Halifax.

Canada Cup competition gets underway on Friday with the 1,500-metre and first 500-metre events, followed by 1,000-metre racing on Saturday and the second 500- and 1,000-metre events on Sunday. The event will feature both current and aspiring national team members looking to gather points toward their national rankings.
