Carly Connell is representing PEI at the Canadian Junior Short Track Championships in Trois Rivières, QC this weekend.

January 9th, 2015, Charlottetown – P.E.I. short-track speed skater Carly Connell hits the ice this weekend in Trois-Rivières, QC to compete in the Canadian Junior Short Track Championships. She’ll be among the top 32 junior female skaters in the country, with a chance to represent Canada at the World Junior Short Track Championships on the line.

Connell earned a berth in the competition, which is open to 14 to 19 year-old skaters, with her performances at a National Qualifier meet in December in Montreal. The 16 year-old Charlottetown native was named to the Island’s Canada Winter Games team last month and is competing in the Junior Championships for the first time. She is believed to be the first Islander to qualify for the event while training on P.E.I.. Scott Beamish was the last Islander to compete in the event, while training in Calgary.

Four spots are open on the female team that will represent Canada at the World Championships from February 27 to March 1 in Osaka, Japan.
