P.E.I. Skaters Grab Medal, PBs in Hampton

January 31st, 2017, Charlottetown – Zachary Chatfield picked up P.E.I.’s lone medal at a recent short-track speed skating competition in Hampton, New Brunswick. The Charlottetown native grabbed a bronze medal in division 3, after posting personal best times in two of three distances at the one-day event. Chatfield also finished as the highest ranked skater in his age group.

Also representing P.E.I. in Hampton were Jacob Theriault, Liam Chatfield and Olivia Wood. Theriault finished as the top ranked Island skater, grabbing 5th place in division 1, after personal best times in his 200 metre and 1500m events. Liam Chatfield skated to 8th in the top division after posting a PB in his 200m sprint, while Olivia Wood notched strong PBs in each of her three events on her way to 6th place in division 4.

Anthony Cormier-Losier of the Codiac Cyclones and Anny Kang of Saint John took home the respective male and female top honours from the meet, which featured 83 skaters from seven clubs in New Brunswick and P.E.I..

Island short-track skaters are now preparing for their next meet in Dieppe, N.B. on February 4 & 5. Close to thirty P.E.I. speed skaters will compete in a field of 185 competitors, as Atlantic skaters look to earn berths in the Canada East Short Track Championships, being hosted in Ottawa on March 25 and 26.
