October 24, 2018, Charlottetown – Speed Skate PEI will play host to the 27th annual Atlantic Cup Speed Skating Championships at Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre this weekend. Over 140 competitors are expected to take to the ice starting Saturday morning.
Competition co-ordinator Jean MacDonald says it promises to be an exciting weekend for the athletes and spectators alike. “With this being a Canada Winter Games season, many athletes are aiming to be at their best this fall to earn selection to their provincial teams. We’ve got over 40 Canada Winter Games hopefuls from the four Atlantic Provinces competing here this weekend, so the competition level will be high.”
Speed Skate PEI says that a dozen Atlantic clubs will be represented.
P.E.I. will be well represented at the weekend event, with nearly forty Islanders racing. Ten Islanders vying for spots with Team P.E.I. at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer will lead the Island team.
Atlantic Cup racing gets underway by 9:00 am on Saturday and Sunday and continues all day. The public is welcome to attend and admission is free.
