January 1st, 2025, Charlottetown – P.E.I. speed skaters Jenna Larter and Andrew Binns will kick off 2025 at Speed Skating Canada’s Long Track Canada Cup 1 in Calgary this weekend. The Canada Cup is used to select the team which will represent Canada on the ISU World Cup circuit for the second half of the season. The country’s top skaters will also race for points toward their Canadian rankings, used to help select athletes to the National and NextGen training programs for next season.

Larter, in her first season as a member of the country’s NextGen team, is one of just five Canadian women who have skated a sub-39 second time in the 500-metre distance this season. The Brookfield native grabbed a bronze medal at the Canadian Championships in October and will be seeking more podium finishes at the Canada Cup this weekend.
Binns, from Stratford, is looking to build on last season’s top-20 Canadian ranking in the 500-metre distance. After sitting out the Canadian Championships in October, Binns will be making his national event debut for 2024-25.
The Canada Cup event gets underway on Thursday afternoon, with both Island sprint specialists skating in the first 500-metre event. Larter and Binns will skate a second 500-metre race on Saturday afternoon. Larter will also compete in 1,000-metre races on Friday and Sunday afternoons.
