March 18th, 2022, Charlottetown – Four P.E.I. speed skaters will compete at the Short Track Canada Cup Junior Final at the Richmond Olympic Oval in British Columbia this weekend. The largest ever Island contingent at a speed skating Canada Cup event includes Jane Bruce of Stratford, William Lyons of Rock Barra, Carter Bruce of Stratford and Zack O’Meara of Charlottetown.

The three Island males will be part of a 60-skater male field, while Jane Bruce will compete among 45 female skaters. Lyons pre-qualified for the event based on his strong 18th place finish at the Canadian Junior Short Track Championships in Sherbrooke, QC in November, while his three team-mates earned their spots through time qualification, based on best times skated by junior-aged skaters across the country this season.

Lyons will be making his third Canada Cup appearance, while O’Meara and the Bruce siblings will make their respective Canada Cup debuts. Lyons enters the event seeded seventh among male skaters, while Carter Bruce is seeded 29th and O’Meara is ranked 50th. Jane Bruce enters the event seeded 37th.

Canada Cup competition gets underway on Friday with the first 1500- and 500-metre races, followed by a second round of 500- and 1500-metre racing on Saturday. The 1000-metre event caps racing on Sunday. Live streaming and results can be found at https://speedskating.ca/mec-events/2021-22-short-track-canada-cup-junior-final/
